Lusaka CBD Prepares for Electronic Parking System

Parking in Lusaka’s Central Business District could soon work differently, with motorists expected to pay according to the number of hours their vehicles remain parked.

The Lusaka City Council says it will soon introduce an electronic parking payment system as part of efforts to bring order to the city centre and strengthen the ongoing Operation Clear Path agenda.

The proposed system will also include a special payment arrangement for people who work in the CBD, although the council has not yet provided details of how the arrangement will work.

In preparation for the rollout, Lusaka Mayor Chitambala Mwewa met with Thamani Technologies and Services Limited, the company engaged to provide the technology and equipment for the initiative.

The company will supply parking sensors, CCTV cameras for monitoring and electronic clamping equipment.

Under the proposed arrangement, vehicles clamped for parking violations will only be released once the offender has paid the applicable fine electronically into the council's account.

The initiative is intended to improve parking management, encourage compliance with parking regulations and support the council's wider efforts to bring order to Lusaka's streets.

However, motorists and CBD workers will be looking out for further details on the implementation date, parking charges and how the special payment arrangement for workers will operate.

For now, the council says the electronic system is coming soon, signalling a planned change in how parking is managed in Lusaka's busy city centre.
